Lantis, Redfern win best of show awards in Handcrafts, needlecrafts

An exquisite mosaic wood wall hanging, made by Dennis Lantis, was named best of show in the handcraft division at the 2010 Clinton County Senior Fair handcraft and needlecraft show. Best of show honors in the needlecraft competition went to Annette Redfern for a ruffled handbag. Winning the sweepstakes awards were Jean Ames for needlecraft and Dianne Fugate for handcrafts.

Lantis’ entry was of a racoon on a limb of an oak tree, complete with acorns hanging from the branch. The piece — which is called intarsia — was 37 inches long and was made with 87 pieces of wood, including various colors of western red cedar, walnut and aspen. The wood pieces are inlaid in patterns to form the piece. Lantis said he has been doing woodworking for 40 years but did not get into the art form of intarsia until four years ago.

Redfern’s entry was a serged satchell purse with ruffles.

“There was a lot of creativity and the overall design was very pleasing,” said Mary Driscoll, show judge, said of Redfern’ purse.
