CLARKSVILLE — The Clinton-Massie Academic Team competed in the National Academic Quiz Team Waverly Invitational Tournament Saturday, Jan. 16 at Waverly High School.

With 90 students competing for top honors, Clinton-Massie’s Nikki Settlemyre finished seventh, scoring 45 points per game. Wyatt Shelton finished 12th scoring 37 points per game and Evan Wright was 26th scoring 18 points per game.

The tournament began with teams competing in round-robin play where Massie finished with a 4-1 record, thus, qualifying the team for the tournament championship bracket.

Eighteen teams competed in the tournament with Clinton-Massie finishing sixth overall, earning the team a bid to the Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago April 30-May 1. This will be Massie’s third trip to the championship tournament, having competed in Minneapolis in 2014 and in Atlanta in 2015.

During competition events, four players compete at a time with each team answering questions in a tossup and bonus format. The team that correctly answers a toss-up question earns a chance to answer three bonus questions.

Massie’s academic team has been playing the quiz bowl format since march 2014 and is currently tied for second place in the South Central Ohio League with a 3-1 record after sweeping their double-header against Wilmington and splitting the games with Hillsboro.
