CANTON, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio officer whose police dog died after being shot during a burglary investigation has a new canine partner from Texas.

The Repository in Canton reports that Canton police officer Ryan Davis was flying home Tuesday from Houston with a dog named Tuko donated by K9s4COPS. The nonprofit offered Canton police a free dog after seeing news of the death of Davis’ former K-9, Jethro.

Jethro was shot while investigating a Jan. 9 break-in. Hundreds of officers from several states attended a community memorial service for the 3-year-old German shepherd hailed by the police chief as a hero that saved lives.

Davis flew to Texas on Sunday to select the new dog. He says Tuko is very stable mentally and calm and stood out among the other dogs.
