Laurel Oaks assistant dean to lead ECHS

LEES CREEK — The assistant dean of instruction for the Laurel Oaks Career Campus in Wilmington will be the new principal at East Clinton High School.

Entering her 20th year in education, Kerri Matheny said she is very excited about becoming the principal at the high school and continuing to build Astro pride.

“I would like everyone to know that building relationships and collaboration is important to me, so I value communication. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Go Astros!” Matheny wrote in an email.

East Clinton Local Schools Superintendent Eric Magee said Matheny “brings quite a bit of expertise in the instructional side of things, and I’m really looking forward to working with her.”

Initially planning on becoming a pharmacist, Matheny worked at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati as a certified pharmacy technician while earning a B.S. in biology from the University of Cincinnati. After encouragement from her parents, she decided to pursue teaching and earned a master’s degree in secondary education from Xavier University and a certification as a 7 through 12 biology and general science teacher.

Matheny began her career at Northwest Local Schools and taught middle school science for three years, and then taught ninth-grade physical science and biology at Monroe Local Schools for seven years.

While at Monroe, she was the science department chair, coached junior high track, and returned to Xavier to become certified as a high school principal and assistant superintendent. These certifications, she said, were motivated by a desire to assist other teachers in improving their practice.

Matheny next became the K through 12 math and science curriculum coordinator for Springboro Community City Schools. After the position was eliminated, she transitioned to career technical education as the director of curriculum and instruction at the Greene County Career Center.

She then became a curriculum specialist for Great Oaks in 2011, working with science, biotechnology, and biomedical science instructors in the Oaks’ four campuses and its satellite programs. She was promoted three years ago to her current position of Laurel Oaks assistant dean of instruction.

Matheny is a member of the 29th Adult Leadership Clinton class.

She was approved for a one-year contract Thursday by the East Clinton school board.

She will be placed on the administrative salary schedule at step 4, year 6, which will be a salary of $91,753.

The high school principal’s job opened at East Clinton when Matt Baker, the current principal, was picked to become the new superintendent for Clinton-Massie Local Schools.
