WILMINGTON — Wilmington High School (WHS) has a new vocational agriculture teacher, Mariah Messink, a graduate of Morehead State University in Kentucky.

Messink earned a degree in agriculture education, and was an active member in the collegiate FFA program, said WHS Principal Mindy McCarty-Stewart.

Messink will host an open house in August for the community, students and parents, at a date to be announced.

Messink succeeds Doug Rinehart, whose resignation was unanimously approved during the school board’s meeting this week.

The process to terminate Rinehart’s employment with the district was started at the prior board meeting, said Wilmington City Schools (WCS) Superintendent Ron Sexton.

There was a resignation agreement with Rinehart stipulating that if he were to resign, then the district would withdraw the resolution to terminate his employment, the superintendent said.

As previously reported, city police charged Rinehart, 44, of Wilmington, with disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. He is due back in court Aug. 8.

Earlier this year, police investigated a complaint that alleged Rinehart inappropriately touched a student at school.

In board of education business:

• The board approved a Safety Intervention Grant awarded by the Bureau of Workers Compensation to purchase and install nine basketball winches.

The total cost of the project is $11,475, of which the grant will pay 75 percent or $8,606 and the remainder will be paid out of the district’s General Fund.

• The board approved the donation of three conference room tables, corner lobby room seating, six office chairs, six two-drawer filing cabinets, and one five-drawer filing cabinet from State Farm Insurance to Holmes Elementary.

The estimated value is $850.
