Set to serve with the pros

The Wilmington High School girls tennis team will be in the spotlight Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason during the Western & Southern Open professional tennis tournament.

The Lady Hurricane, coached by Doug Cooper, will face Mt. Vernon High School at 11 a.m. Saturday on courts 5-8.

The WSO women’s semifinal matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“The players and coaches are excited to play on the same courts as the pros and especially during a world-class professional tennis tournament,” said Cooper. “Due to the recent facility upgrades, the Lindner Family Tennis Center has become a favorite venue for the professional players and fans alike.”

Also Saturday, Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame is scheduled to face Perry High School at 12:30 p.m. in another high school match.

Cooper said the high schools were selected to participate in the WSO event because of the United States Tennis Association youth tennis program.

“The Wilmington Area Tennis Association (WATA) has piloted programs that have become standard curriculum in USTA national instructional programming for various youth age groups,” said Cooper. “We have been a great testing ground because of our lack of local private tennis clubs, large number of youth participants and excellent adult leadership. Jim Amick of the USTA has worked closely with WATA to develop youth programming. We have former and current players working on staff right now at the Western & Southern Open.”
