CLARKSVILLE — The Southwest Region of the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) recognized Clinton-Massie Elementary School’s Computer Coding Club during its recent Annual Fall Meeting and Award Dinner at the Miami Valley Career and Technology Center. The recognition was for being selected to present at the OSBA Capital Conference and Tradeshow Nov. 13-16 in Columbus.

The Capital Conference and Trade Show is considered Ohio’s premier continuing education program — delivering practical solutions to help educational leaders improve student learning and achievement.

One of the most rewarding and successful exhibitions at the conference is the Student Achievement Fair that showcases innovative projects and programs like CMES’s Computer Coding Club.

Massie’s Coding Club was founded when teachers and parents recognized the need for extra-curricular computer instruction. The club held its first meeting in the spring of 2015 and currently meets once week for six weeks, once or twice a year.

Open to students in third through fifth grade, the coding club is an after-school enrichment club that engages students in computer programing by using Scratch, Code.org, student creativity and problem-solving skills to create animations, artwork, stories, and games. The club is also exploring the possibility of branching out into other areas of technology and multimedia presentations.

Club members participating in the Student Achievement Fair include Sammy Dameron, Macy Kreider, Ian Schumm, Aiden Sharrett, and Hayden Turner. Also attending are club founders CM parent, Bryce Schumm and Laura Darcy and Mary Ritter who both teach at CMES and serve as club advisors.
