‘Wilmington Succeeds’ makes college affordable

WILMINGTON — Wilmington College is hosting an informational night for students and parents interested in learning about the Wilmington Succeeds program Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in Room 308 of the Center for the Sciences and Agriculture.

The new facility is at the corner of College and Elm streets.

Designed to keep young professionals in the community, this unique partnership between Wilmington City Schools, the City of Wilmington, Wilmington College and Southern State Community College gives Wilmington High School graduates an opportunity to get a college education almost debt-free.

WHS students’ end of the bargain is to simply work hard to qualify for enrollment at Wilmington College or Southern State Community College, graduate and agree to reside in the City of Wilmington for at least two years after earning your bachelor’s degree.

The local community college can be an appealing option for students looking to leverage available resources in the first two years, as tuition can be offset through such means as participation in Ohio’s College Credit Plus option, federal funding through the Pell Grant for those eligible, and need and merit-based scholarships.

Wilmington College has committed to providing up to $10,000 in forgivable loan support to WHS students that complete their junior and senior years at WC. This windfall does not apply to students’ freshman and sophomore years at the College. Upon their graduation from WC, the loan amount will be reduced by 75 percent and, if the graduate lives or works in Wilmington for at least the following two years, the remaining 25 percent will be forgiven.

Since its inception in 2014, Wilmington College has had 11 students enrolled in the program. The College will share some of these success stories at the session while providing additional information to Wilmington High School students and parents about how the program can help make a Wilmington College education more affordable.

Any questions should be directed to WC’s student financial services representative, Sonia Thompson, at [email protected].
