WILMINGTON — Safety was on the minds of members of the Wilmington Streets Committee during their meeting on Thursday.

The biggest issue discussed involved East End Elementary and Applegate Street. According to Marian Miller, the Mayor’s Executive Assistant, a resident of Applegate told her she is “slowly losing their front yard” due to drivers pulling onto her property to drop kids off to the school, and other residents have voice concerns.

“It’s not only that they’re parking in their yard, people will pull around the buses that are lined up on Columbus Street and park. Then cars coming down Applegate pull around the cars and go down Columbus Street and it becomes an issue,” said Miller.

Miller said other parents have explained that it’s very dangerous and they’ve expressed concerns. According to Miller, Director of Law Brett Rudduck will provide a drone video to show the committee what the situation looks like.

Committee Chair Joe Spicer said that they will put this on the agenda for the next meeting and will reach out to get someone from East End Elementary to sit in with them.

Also during the meeting, Spicer told those in attendance that there had been concerns from residents about drivers speeding around Prairie Avenue, which is 25 mph speed zone. He said a citizen told him they thought people were going too fast down the road.

The committee discussed the possibility of changing the speed limit from 25 to 35 since they and others shared similar frustrations of radically changing their speed for the street.

City Service Director Brian Shidaker said he expects the city to be consulting with an engineer soon “and I could have the firm look at it and get their suggestions.”

Shidaker added that this wouldn’t lead to a full street study of the area, but would point the city in the right direction to address it.
