Sabina rail crossing to get warning devices

SABINA — Flashing lights and roadway gates will be added to a railroad crossing at North College Street in the village.

The $185,261 project is scheduled to be done by mid-May 2016. It does not pull any dollars from the village treasury, Sabina Village Councilman Bill Lewis said during Thursday’s session of council.

The crossing was surveyed in late 2013 because of its hazard ranking and was found to warrant the upgrade, according to Lewis, reading from a notice by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).

According to the PUCO’s website, the annual number of train-motor vehicle crashes in Ohio has decreased significantly, from 123 in 2001 to 76 in 2014.

Sabina Mayor Dean Hawk said the upcoming project at the Indiana & Ohio Railway crossing is “good news.”

In his mayor’s report, Hawk said he is looking forward to construction of the Clinton-Fayette Friendship Trail bike path, and to the benefit of bike traffic from Washington Court House to Sabina — he hopes by next year. To that end, he said he continues to lobby for the work on the Clinton County portion of the path to start on the leg east of Sabina, which will run from Borum Road near Fayette County into Sabina.

The plans for the trail call for it to link Sabina and Washington Court House.

Sabina Police Cpl. John Grehl stopped by council chambers to do a show-and-tell with the police department’s canine unit. The female dog, of the Belgian Malinois breed, will be 2 years old in November.

After training, the dog started police work on Aug. 22. Grehl, who is the dog’s handler, said his canine partner can alert both on drugs and articles.

Sabina Police Chief Keynon Young previously said an estimated amount of $15,400 to purchase and train a police dog was accumulated through donations and the drug fund.

In other news from Sabina Village Council:

Council OK’d two building permits for John Meshefski. The purpose of one of the permits is to do an estimated $5,000 to $10,000 addition to a machine shop.

The village’s newly acquired street cleaner has been utilized, reported Village Administrator Rob Dean. The reconditioned street sweeper is expected to cost the village $34,500. That figure is lower than it otherwise would have been because Sabina 2000, a community improvement group, donated $5,000 toward the purchase.

Hawk said Sabina 2000 has been “great to the village.”
