WILMINGTON — Wilmington Police were called to the high school Thursday morning after a suspicious item was found in the garbage.
“A faculty member heard something coming from a garbage can and upon inspection saw an item that didn’t appear right,” said WPD Chief Duane Weyand. “He notified the school administration and the school resource officer. The school started evacuation procedures.”
As officers arrived on scene the suspicious items was inspected and determined to be nothing more than bottles tied together with a child’s battery-operated hair dryer.
“Looking at this item while it was in a garbage can could give the appearance of something dangerous,” Weyand said. “Upon watching school video the student responsible for placing this item in the trash was identified. Shortly after he was located and questioned and it was determined that the suspicious item was trash he picked up on his way into school and he tied it all together with a battery-operated hair dryer, which caused the vibration of the items.”
Once this was established, the all-clear was given and everyone returned to the school.
