Join a team, help a dream: Little Hearts Big Smiles sets events

WILMINGTON — Since 2006, Little Hearts Big Smiles has been helping families and special needs children in Clinton County.

Initially established as a support group for families seeking guidance, emotional support and networking opportunities, it has evolved into much more. You may be familiar with their Handi-accessible playground on Fife Avenue, and you may have even attended an event or two.

This spring, Little Hearts Big Smiles will be kicking off the season with a couple of family-friendly events.

On Saturday, April 8, Little Hearts Big Smiles whost their annual Quarter Auction at Wilmington High School. Admission for this event is free and the organization will have many donated items up for auction. There will also be many concessions available. Doors open for this event at 5 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

In anticipation of warmer weather, LHBS will also host their annual 5K on May 20; a big thanks to Vital Fitness for supporting the 5K.

This year, Little Hearts Big Smiles is trying something different by rallying participants to show support by joining teams led by a team captain. The captains (pictured here) are as follows:

• Andrew’s Army

• Brei’s Brigade

• Team Paxton and Irene

• Gracie’s Squad

• Team Braydyn

• Abby’s Army

This will be a walk-or-run event with prizes going to the top-three finishers for both male and female.

All of the teams will have a specialty shirt made for the 5K; however, joining a team is not a requirement to participate. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 20 at 1400 Fife Ave. with the 5K starting at 9 a.m. Registration is now open to sign up for the 5K.

All proceeds from these events will go to benefit Phase 4 of the Little Hearts Big Smiles Playground. Phase 4 includes the addition of handi-accessible restrooms for children and families.
