Continental Manor honors volunteers

BLANCHESTER — Continental Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Blanchester recently held an appreciation dinner to honor their many volunteers during National Volunteer Appreciation Week.

Executive Director Tom Cunningham, started the evening off by welcoming everyone to the dinner, and offered words of thanks for their attendance and for the service they provide to the residents of Continental.

Rev. Paul Crisp then gave a blessing over the meal. After dinner, an awards ceremony took place. Volunteers received a Volunteer Appreciation Certificate and gift.

Among those in attendance were Rev. Crisp from Blanchester Nazarene Church with 28 years of volunteer service. Others from the congregation included Charlie and Jeannie Laufer and David and Lori Cauley, and their daughters Laura and Grace. They come the first Sunday of each month and provide church services and music for the residents.

Full Gospel Christian Assembly members in attendance were Larry and Shawnda Saylor (five years service), Dave and Dini Feck and Bob Mountainjoy. They come the third Sunday of every month and provide church services and come every Monday and do one-on-one visits with residents.

Waters of Mercy Church of God members in attendance were Dan and Bonnie Reed, Leah Medley, Celia Medley and her four children. They come the fourth Sunday and fourth Wednesday of each month and provide church services and Bible study.

Others in attendance were Joe McFarland, who sings gospel music for the residents. Richard Burwinkel has provided communion for the Catholic residents on Sundays for the past 13 years. Travis Corzatt has also been coming to Continental for 13 years providing one-on-one visits to the residents.

Carol Turner shops and wraps gifts for the residents and brings them in for the monthly birthday party and for Christmas. The money to purchase the gifts comes from the Clinton County Homemakers & Nursing Guild. Carol also does communion on Wednesdays and one-on-one visits with residents. She has been a volunteer for 32 years.

Judy Grosvenor is president of the Clinton County Homemakers & Nursing Guild and has been volunteering at Continental for 10 years. She helps with the monthly birthday party and residents’ Christmas party. Also from the same organization was volunteer Linda Carson.

Helen Kirkendall has brought in birthday gifts for every resident, purchased with her own money. She has been coming to Continental for 13 years. She said she will continue bringing in gifts for residents who might not have any family or visitors, for as long as she is able to.

Betty Davis has been helping with activities and parties for the past six years. She also comes in and plays cards and other games with the residents in the evening, when the other activities are over for the day.

Archie Arthur has been helping residents with bingo for five years.

Toni Barnes, Bearneace and Marion Hampton and William Hall have been coming in for the past couple of years singing for residents and providing entertainment at parties and socials.

Vanessa Beach has been helping out on outings for the past couple of years. Jenny Dobbs is the Easter Bunny. She comes in every year and brings treats for the residents and poses for “Photos with the Easter Bunny.”

Hannah Piatt comes in several days a week and helps out with crafts and other activities, as well as with outings and one-on-one visits.

Jackie Feirl helps out with the games, outings and parties. Ann Mielke helps out with bingo for the residents. Bobby Lewis comes in and sings for our residents and provides entertainment at socials.

Fritz Reed is Continental’s activity assistant and Activity Director is Lisa Beach.

Beach said she was very pleased with the turnout to this year’s appreciation dinner, and is in hopes that those that were unable to attend, will be able to attend next year.

She said that Continental is very blessed to have such a great group of volunteers. Volunteers that make such a huge difference in the lives of our residents.
