Open house scheduled for Thursday, May 4 at Clinton County Senior Center

WILMINGTON — The Clinton County Senior Center will hold an open house and membership celebration this Thursday so more people can know what the center has to offer to residents 50 and older.

The membership age has been lowered from 60 to 50, said Clinton County Community Action Program Executive Assistant Jane Newkirk.

The 5 to 7 p.m. open house at the facility’s 717 N. Nelson Ave. location in Wilmington will include tours, entertainment, refreshments, door prizes and a chance to ask questions.

What are some of the things offered at the center, whose full name is the Wilmington Savings Bank-Clinton County Senior Center?

“Silver Sneakers” exercise is offered three mornings a week. And on May 10 “Senior Stretch” will be launched. It will be held on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. Maribeth Bevis will be the instructor for the “Senior Stretch” class.

Bevis is the same person who did the Silver Sneakers program at the local YMCA before it closed, and she leads Silver Sneakers at the senior center, as well.

There is a room in the senior center with exercise equipment, including treadmills and exercise bikes.

The senior center has three pool tables, a patio area, a library, and a craft room.

Congregate dining is available at 11:30 a.m. weekdays for a suggested $2.50 donation. A la carte meals (open to the general public) also may be purchased, at costs running from $2 ham-and-beans to $5 for taco salad.

Card games such as hand-and-foot, euchre and bridge are played regularly.

There are about 800 dues-paying members.

Though you can attend the senior center without becoming a member, there are perks to being a member. Membership dues are $20 annually and provide seniors with a monthly newsletter in the mail, discounts on trips taken throughout the year, and more.

Membership dues also help subsidize the operations.

Senior Center Director Stella Cramer said they have to subsidize because federal Title III funding has not increased since before the seniors moved from the old school building on West Sugartree Street to North Nelson Avenue in 2001. In fact, Title III funding has been reduced the past couple years, she said.

The center is open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering to serve at the center to cover the phone or drive seniors (and go) to monthly evening meals at restaurants in the region are encouraged to inquire.
