Shelly Fast of Wilmington, office manager for McBrayer Real Estate Co., spoke to the A.M. Rotary Club on May 19.
She said she came back to the area 23 years ago with her husband and three daughters after her husband retired from the U.S. Army. Her parents, Dick and Janet Mitchener, live here as well, with other family members living close by in Greene County. She and her family attend Chester Friends Meeting on Gurneyville Road.
Shelly spoke to the club regarding the ever-growing instances of grandparents raising grandchildren. Shelly and her husband raised two of their grandchildren for several years. She talked about the ways that experience has changed her life and also that she sees this trend increasing due to the increasing problems with drugs.
She emphasized how important accepting help and support can be to families going through this experience.
Shelly has worked with Wilma McBrayer for 11 years and she and her husband, Ben, in addition to their three daughters and two sons-in-laws, have six wonderful grandchildren.
