Tumble over to Aerial’s open house

Join the Wilmington-Clinton County Chamber of Commerce and Aerial Athletics’ staff and families for an open house and ribbon cutting at Aerial’s Athletics, LLC, on Thursday, Dec. 3. The open house is 6-8 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6: p.m. Aerial’s is located in the former YMCA gym, 700 Elm St., Wilmington.

Aerial’s will be offering free goodies and a special visit from Santa Claus throughout the open house, as well as demonstrations of their classes.

Aerial’s was founded in 1994 by Tina (Crites) Maynard in Leesburg. Angie Layne bought the business in 2004 and expanded into Clinton County. Operating on Davids Drive for years, Aerial’s Athletics served hundreds of children each year offering quality gymnastics, acrobatics, cheerleading and tumbling instruction.

Unfortunately, in 2012 Angie was diagnosed with a spinal tumor. Upon diagnosis and uncertain future, Angie closed the Leesburg location and sold the assets at the Davids Drive location to an outside business (Trics Gymnastics). She was able to keep the small Waynesville location open during her surgeries and recovery thanks to Candace Frump, who helped to oversee operations during her recovery.

After a successful recovery, Angie was hired in August 2014 to revamp and expand the gymnastics program at the Clinton County YMCA. Although the YMCA teams had a successful season and program last year serving more than 200 children, it wasn’t enough to keep the Y open. Although it saddens Angie that the Y no longer exists, she’s thrilled to have been able to sign a lease with Wilmington College to use the gym space.

Aerial’s Athletics, LLC opened back up in Wilmington on Sept. 1 and now offers programming five days a week including acro, gymnastics, tumbling, parent & child classes, preschool gymnastics, boys tumbling, dance and more. Aerial’s also has three team programs: the Performance Team (ages 5 & up); Competitive Girls Gymnastics Team (USAG Levels 3 & up); and the National Champion Aerial’s Acro Team (USAG Levels 6 through Elite).

The 40 team members most recently performed Nov. 24 at the Ohio State men’s basketball game. In addition to the above programming, Aerial’s also offers access to the walking track to the public for a minimal fee.
