WHS bands grateful for community

0

On behalf of the Wilmington High School Bands I want to say thank you to the Wilmington community, our booster club, parents, alumni, and friends for their support of our program. Without the combined efforts of the school district, band boosters, and community, we would be financially unable to provide a quality program for our students.

The Wilmington band students participate and perform in a wide variety of programs throughout the school year. The members of the marching, concert, pep and jazz bands participate in over 65 local, regional, and state performances every year. These events include competitions, festivals, community concerts, professional development conferences, and regional and all-state bands. As a result, we consider our students to be some of the most active and well-rounded students on our campus.

Countless studies and research brings significance to the value of music and art in our schools. The U.S. Department of Labor issued a report in the 1990s that specifically recommended that performing and visual arts are core subjects in order to teach skills such as working in teams, communication, self-esteem, creative thinking, imagination and invention. This notion was reconfirmed with passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) identifying Music as a stand-alone core subject in our curriculum.

I urge your continued support for public school music programs and the arts in our schools. The arts provide for and enhance quality of life for everyone. Additional information on the Wilmington Bands, as well as a performance schedule, may be found on our web site at www.wilmingtonbands.org
