Council needs to take action

In reference to the Dec. 2, 2016 issue of the News Journal providing info on two street problems — East End Elementary/Applegate Street and speeding on Prairie Avenue … The committee’s action was to have the director of law generate a drone video for them to study. the next meeting is not currently scheduled, so who knows when this safety issue will be addressed.

The solution to both these problems is quite simple if city council will act:

• Make Applegate one-way from Columbus to Rombach. Put a stop sign at the west end of Columbus so the buses have a chance to get out of the lot. Buses can still go both ways on Columbus as they currently do. A few residents and visitors may be affected by going around a different block to go east on Rombach (John Street and Fife Avenue vs. Columbus and Oak), but timing is about the same. A second step, long-term, would be to put sidewalks and curbs on Applegate to protect against yard encroachment and to enhance safety.

• Ohio speed limit instructions state “when setting speed limits it is important to have speed limits that the majority of drivers consider reasonable” and “ODOT does not want to set unreasonably low speed limits that would make the average driver a law breaker.” The speed limit of 25 mph from Jenny Lane out Prairie Avenue doesn’t meet either of these criteria. It should be 35 mph as evidenced by no one being under 25 mph, as apparent from the flashing sign erected to let the neighbors have something to complain about.

Hopefully, this letter points the law director and city council in the right direction and we don’t have to spend unnecessary funds on drones and engineering studies. Open your eyes and you have ample data. Perhaps a few calls from community members to city officials would help.

A little action, please — a couple of sign changes is all we need.
