WILMINGTON — Betsy Ross, President and Founder of Game Day Communications, was one of the first women to break into national sports news as an anchor at ESPN, where she was on the air for five years.

Before anchoring Sports Center and ESPN News, Ross worked at NBC News Channel and Cincinnati’s NBC affiliate WLWT-TV, where she covered the 1996 presidential election and inauguration and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Games.

The guest speaker at the annual Outstanding Women of Clinton County event March 4 at the Roberts Centre continues to be involved in sports broadcasting as play-by-play anchor for women’s college basketball for ESPN, Fox Sports and other national and regional outlets, and as a sports reporter for Cincinnati’s FOX 19.

She is also the in-stadium announcement voice of the Cincinnati Bengals and University of Cincinnati women’s basketball.

“I am honored to be part of the Outstanding Women of Clinton County event,” Ross told the News Journal. “The list of women recognized over the years is impressive, and I’m looking forward to meeting and talking with this latest class of honorees.”

Ross also teaches a master’s level course, Sports and PR, at Xavier University and an undergraduate course in Sports Journalism at Indiana University.

She is active with Special Olympics, March of Dimes, Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Women’s Sports Association and the Ronald McDonald House.

A native of Connersville, Indiana, Ross received her bachelor’s degree at Ball State University and master’s degree at the University of Notre Dame.

Her awards include Ball State Journalism Hall of Fame and Ball State Distinguished Alumni. She has received the Sagamore of the Wabash award, the highest civilian award given to Indiana residents, and is a Kentucky Colonel. She was named one of the Leading Women in Cincinnati in 1997 and received the Ohio Governor’s Small Business award in 2007.
