MORROW — Little Miami turned away a pair of Wilmington comebacks to hold off the Hurricane 57-48 Monday.

The Panthers (7-3) closed the opening period with a 13-2 run and led the rest of the way.

LM’s advantage hovered around seven points most of the evening, except for when the Hurricane (6-6) closed to within 23-20 midway through the second quarter, LM scored five straight to open the second half for 34-22 lead and when Wilmington trimmed Little Miami’s lead to 45-41 with 5:12 to go in the game.

“Their guard play matched the quickness of our guards. We did a terrible job against the press. We didn’t get back (defensively). They ran right past us. That shouldn’t happen to us,” Wilmington head coach Mark Short said. “They’re a good team. This would’ve been a big win for us. They’re in first place in their league. That’s why we play these types of teams, to get better.

“We can’t let this linger too long. We have a big game Wednesday night at Washington Court House. We’ve got to get ready for that.”

Panther Maddie Huffman led all scorers with 19 points, including 11 in the third. Teammate Julia Miller joined Huffman in double-figures with 11.

Mya Jackson led the Hurricane with nine.
