WHS wins SCOL wrestling thriller

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE — The Wilmington High School wrestling team won a South Central Ohio League thriller over Washington 40-39 Thursday night.

The match was tied 39-39 after 14 bouts so criteria decided the outcome. WHS coach Kelly Tolliver said the Hurricane were awarded the team victory based on the fifth or sixth level of criteria — most pins. WHS had 6 pins and Washington had 5 pins.

“It’s a rare occasion when that happens,” said Tolliver. “I’ve only heard stories (about it). Never personally happened to me and I’ve never seen it happen in our league. It’s pretty rare.”

The Hurricane also defeated East Clinton 59-11. The Astros also were defeated by the Blue Lions 57-20.

Sawyer Garrison posted a 7-2 win in the final match of the night, making the score 39-39. Tolliver though the Hurricane had won while the head table had the Blue Lions winning by a point. In the end both were wrong and criteria had to settle the outcome.

“He (Sawyer) knew he was the deciding factor,” Tolliver said. “It was a nailbiter clear to the end.”

Tolliver said this early January match against Washington has been a big one for his Hurricane during the three seasons he’s been head coach.

“Whenever we get to this match at Court House, this seems to be the turning point in our season,” said Tolliver. “The team came alive. They were excited, they wanted this match. There were kids who probably won matches that shouldn’t have.”

Tolliver noted pins by Isaac Allen at 145 and Doug Eastes at 170 being key to the victory. But also a loss to RJ Tolliver, who managed to avoid a pin at the hands of a returning state qualifier.

“(RJ) was probably close to being pinned in that match and he did get tech’d but that one point difference was the difference in the match,” said the WHS coach. “We told them in the lockerroom that every single point you score is going to matter. When you lose, you have to lose small. When you win, you have to win big.”
