Blue Lions turn tables on WHS wrestlers

WASHINGTON – In another thrilling match, Wilmington was defeated by Washington 42-33 Wednesday night in the OHSAA State Duals Region 15 tournament at Washington Senior High School.

The quarterfinal victory puts the Blue Lions into next week’s Region 15 semifinal match with county rival Miami Trace. New Richmond and Western Brown will face off in the other semifinal match. The site has yet to be determined.

“This team can’t wait to get to the league (South Central Ohio League) meet where they can see both Trace and Court House,” WHS coach Kelly Tolliver said after the match.

Wilmington opened with a 53-28 win over a spirited McClain squad.

Washington defeated Chillicothe 62-6 in its first round match.

As expected, those wins put the Hurricane against the Blue Lions in the match of the night. The two teams met earlier this season with WHS winning 40-39 based on criteria after a 39-39 tie.

The Blue Lions took the early lead 18-6, with Sawyer Garrison scoring the win. Jacob Boldman’s pin at 132 made it 18-12. Isaac Allen won at 145 but the Hurricane trailed 24-15.

Bryant Bergefurd (pin) and Doug Eastes (decision) had back-to-back wins to get WHS within 30-24. Briten Kessler had a big win at 195 and then Gage Smith had a pin at 220 to send the outcome to the final bout of the night.

Wilmington’s Wesley Lunsford, in only the second varsity match of his career, was pinned by Blue Lion veteran Trevor Hicks.

“This team faced a lot of adversity coming into this match,” Tolliver said. “With all those things going against us and we still lost by only this much.

“This team is resilient.”

Tolliver commended wrestling of Smith and Kessler saying “both were very impressive.” The WHS coach also said Allen “has been on fire the last three weeks.”
