Blanchester High School girls basketball coach Bennie Carroll earned Div. II co-coach of the year in the state of Ohio, it was announced by The Associated Press Tuesday night.
“That’s unbelievable,” Carroll said. “I appreciate that.”
Clinton-Massie senior guard Miquela Santoro earned a spot on the Div. II All-Ohio second team.
Santoro, a 5-7 senior, averaged 21 points, 5 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 5.4 steals per game for the Lady Falcons. She made 49 percent of her field goal attempts, including 53 percent of her three-pointers. She has signed to play Winthrop University.
Carroll, a long-time boys basketball coach, was in his first year as the BHS varsity girls coach. He had been the reserve girls coach for two seasons.
Carroll and the Ladycats went from four wins in 2014-15 to 18 regular season wins in 2015-16. Blanchester won its first varsity girls basketball league championship since 1989 by topping the field in the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference National Division.
“A lot of factors came together in a good way,” Carroll said. “It was a fun year for all of us.”
Carroll has coached basketball 25 years, 18 of those as a varsity coach. This season was his only season as a girls varsity basketball coach. He did coach two years of reserve girls basketball at BHS before taking over the varsity position.
