BLANCHESTER — The Blanchester tennis team opened its 2016 season Monday with a 5-0 loss to New Richmond on the BHS courts.

Blanchester has six new starters among the seven lineup slots while New Richmond returns all seven starters, BHS coach Scott Shepard said.

New Richmond is the defending Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference American Division champion.

“All in all, we are extremely pleased,” Shepard said. “We gained valuable match experience.”

Matt Burden and Jacob Miller lost in the first two singles positions for Blanchester but Shepard said “both Matt and Jacob lost to extremely talented and experienced players.”

WHS softball

sweeps Badin JV

The Wilmington High School reserve softball team swept Hamilton Badin in a season-opening doubleheader Saturday at the WHS field.

Wilmington, 2-0 on the year, will play at Beavercreek 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lady Hurricane won the first game 15-5 then scored a 12-2 win in the second game.

Alix Smith was the winning pitcher in the first game. She was aided defensively by third baseman Dee Snell, who turned a double play by catching a line drive then firing to Kaylee Tackett at second who threw to Nicole Gallion at first.

Wilmington broke the first game open with an eight-run third inning, started by Shay Mitchell’s lead-off single.

In the nightcap, Tackett gave up four singles to pick up the pitching victory. Wilmington scored a run in every inning for the win.

loses 2 at LM JV

MORROW — The Wilmington High School reserve baseball team dropped a pair of games Saturday to open its season.

The Hurricane lost to Little Miami 8-2 in the first game of a doubleheader and then dropped the nightcap 13-6.

In the opener, Grant Mayer went five innings on the mound for the Hurricane, allowing two earned runs and seven hits while striking out three and walking three. Jason Wilson pitched an inning for WHS, surrendering an earned run.

Nate Lakes had two hits and two runs batted in for Wilmington at the plate. Mayer had a single while Logan Frazier had a single and two walks.

In the second game, Ben McCallister gave up six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of pitching. Wilson came on and went 1 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs. Brady Bergefurd then came on in the fifth and gave up two earned runs and struck out three in an inning of work. Alex Mayer pitched an inning and gave up one run. Lakes pitched a perfect seventh inning

Colt Smith doubled and was driven home by Lakes. Hunter DeWeese singled and scored on a passed ball in the sixth while Nathan Barker drive in Kyler Reed.

DeWeese had two hits and scored three runs. Barker finished with two hits and two RBI. Reed had three hits, a stolen base and a run scored. Grant Mayer had two hits, with a walk, a stolen base and an RBI.

Wilmington will play 5 p.m. Tuesday at Lebanon. The first South Central Ohio League game for the Hurricane is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday at McClain. WHS hosts Northwest Thursday and Hillsboro on Friday.
