ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Madilyn Newton’s single to left brought home the winning run as Clinton-Massie defeated Miami Trace 3-2 in eight innings in a South Central Ohio League game on the CM diamond.
“I’m very proud of my girls,” said CM coach Andy Lauer. “They never gave up. We went down 2-1 in top of sixth and we came back and tied the game. Senior Caitlyn Robinson’s three hits and freshman Taylor Florea’s pitching was big. The sacrifice bunts we executed tonight were huge in setting up our scoring.”
The win puts the Lady Falcons at 17-0 overall and 11-0 in the SCOL.
“This was a huge win for us tonight against a good Miami Trace softball team,” Lauer said. “I knew it was going to be a good game as they most always are against Trace. They have a good program.”
Robinson doubled home Emilie Fisher in the first inning as the Lady Falcons grabbed a 1-0 lead. Miami Trace came right back and tied the game in the second on a solo homerun by Alexis Swartz then took the lead in the sixth, 2-1, when Ashley Campbell drilled a homer to left for the Panthers.
Robinson was in the middle of Massie’s next run when she singled in the sixth and scored on Taylor Florea’s sacrifice fly to left. That tied the game at 2-2.
In the eighth, with runners on second and third with two outs, Newton singled between shortstop and third base to bring Hailey Clayborn with the winning run.
Lauer said the CM defense “had some great plays” to complete the team effort.
