LEES CREEK — The Wilmington High School reserve baseball team defeated East Clinton 14-1 in a South Central Ohio League contest at ECHS.

The JV ’Cane improve to 9-6 overall and 8-2 against SCOL teams.

Freshman Alex Meyer threw a five inning complete game for the Hurricane, striking out eight, allowing two hits, one earned run and one base on balls.

“Alex did a great job of settling in as the game went on,” WHS coach Dustin James said. “Alex retired batters in order in three of the five innings, which really helped his pitch count and allowed him to complete the game.”

Wilmington had 12 hits, four walks and stole six bases. Sophomore Brady Bergefurd had two hits with a walk and three runs batted in.

Grant Mayer had a hit, two runs scored, a walk and three stolen bases. Alex Meyer, Kyler Reed, Brett Bell and Drew Spendlove drove in two runs each. Spendlove had two hits while Nate Lakes, Zach Zeckser, Bell, Reed, and Josh Piechocki collected one hit each.

DJ Ames had a hit, walked twice and scored two runs.

“Everyone worked hard and won their battle,” said James. “Alex pitched a great game, the defense did its job, and we had good plate appearances. We need to continue this effort as we face some tough talent over the next week and finish our season.”
