AMELIA — Unable to overcome a slow start, the Blanchester baseball team fell to Roger Bacon 3-1 Wednesday in a Division III Cincinnati Sectional championship game at Midland Field.
Blanchester finishes the season 16-6. Roger Bacon continues its season in the district championship game 5 p.m. Friday against Anna at Kenton Ridge High School.
“I didn’t really know what we were going to get out of this team,” said BHS coach Aaron Lawson. “To win 16 games this year, those kids earned that. They put in the work.”
Blanchester fell behind 3-0 through two innings. The Spartans didn’t hit a ball hard all night, but took advantage of five walks from Alec Richardson and a timely error in the field to take the early lead.
“I feel like if he (pitched) like he did the third through sixth innings, he could have shut them out,” Lawson said. “They never really blistered the baseball.”
After the second, Richardson retired 10 batters in a row at one point.
The Wildcats had a 6-2 advantage in hits.
“Coming in I was worried if we were going to hang with them hitting and, heck, we were the better hitting team,” said Lawson.
But Blanchester couldn’t get hits with runners in scoring position. In fact, with runners at second and third and no outs in the seventh, the Wildcats went down in order from there with Daulton Stevens, Dustin Howard and Aaron Anderson.
“We had some baserunning mistakes,” said Lawson. “We didn’t have timely hitting with runners on.”
