Rollins ‘hungry’

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – For the second straight day, Quinten Rollins did not practice with the Green Bay Packers.

As the team took part in Friday’s morning workout at Ray Nitschke Field, Rollins stood on the sideline watching … and waiting.

“It grounds you,” he said in the Packers locker room Friday afternoon. “You see things from a different perspective. It makes me a lot more hungry.”

Rollins said he will not practice Saturday, when the team dons full pads for the first time. The Packers are not scheduled to practice Sunday.

Rollins tweaked his hamstring during a workout at Miami of Ohio a couple weeks ago. When he arrived at Packers camp, the training staff decided to hold him out of practice.

The team has placed Rollins on the Non-Football Injury List. Rollins said this is the first time in his athletic career he’s missed consecutive days of practice in either football or basketball.

Rollins is focusing on the cornerback position when he delves into his iPad playbook after practice. There is no talk of moving him to safety, as there was when he went through the pre-draft process.

“It’s corner and nickel (packages) right now,” he said.

During spring practices, Rollins fielded punts. He was a third team All-Ohio running back at Wilmington High School, dazzling Hurricane fans and frazzling opponents with his shifty moves.

“They had me catching punts during the spring,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll get a chance but if I don’t, it’s not the end of the world. But if I can make an impact on special teams I’ll do that.”

Rollins said he’s learned plenty since joining the Packers organization.

“I’ve learned a lot of things already, things I didn’t even know being a sports head,” he said. “All the meetings in April, May, June, at least for the great ones. Then you get a month off.”

That month off doesn’t mean time off from being a professional football player. It simply means Rollins wasn’t in Green Bay.

“It’s a 12-month job for me because I’m out there trying to be great,” said Rollins, the 2010 WHS and 2015 Miami of Ohio graduate drafted in the second round by the Packers this spring.

Rollins is as level-headed as any 23-year-old could hope to be. Regardless of his draft position, he knows this time off the field isn’t helping him.

“Nothing’s guaranteed in this business, he said. “It can be taken away at any time. Just because of where I’m drafted doesn’t mean I’m coming in here guaranteed anything.”
