WC women’s soccer plays to 0-0 draw with Wittenberg

In a defensive battle, the Wilmington College women’s soccer team managed its second consecutive draw of the season, a scoreless venture with Wittenberg in non-conference action on Townsend Field at Williams Stadium.

“It was a hard-fought game,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “We played well defensively. The midfield did a good job and we played well with the new players that came off the bench. If we could have found a little more offense and a dangerous shot, we could have won.”

Wittenberg had the edge on shots, 14-6, and with shots on goal, 7-2. Both of Wilmington’s shots on frame came in the extra periods.

Senior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) and senior Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) each had two shots and one on goal.

“We need to work (on our offense),” said Spirk. “We have dangerous people in those spots, but we are just not getting it done. We have to work on creating more offense and putting away our chances. We had people in dangerous positions and we just couldn’t do anything with it.”

Junior Ana Hosler, 0-1-2, (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) stopped all seven shots she faced.

Spirk acknowledged his team is not a finished product and highlighted the several players that played the entire game.

“A lot of players played 110 minutes and we had a couple freshmen that played 110 minutes and those are definite pluses,” said Spirk. “I don’t expect us to be playing our best soccer right now, but we are getting there. We just have to improve offensively.”

Wilmington travels to Manchester 1 p.m. Saturday for another non-conference tilt.
