WEEK 5: Clinton-Massie mauls McClain 56-0

0

GREENFIELD – The sign greeting the McClain Tigers as they entered the field before their game with Clinton-Massie Friday read “Hey Clinton Massie, your mom called & you left your game at home.”

It only took 64 seconds for an industrial-sized container of it to be delivered.

Mama said there’d be days like this, and it certainly was for the Tigers (1-4, 0-2). The Falcons, ranked 15th in the latest Associated Press Division IV football poll, scored the first four times they touched the ball and cruised to a 56-0 victory.

“We got back to old-school Clinton-Massie football, running the option well. We came in trying to establish the fullback. We had Brad (Hunt) back. When you have a fullback-based offense and you get your fullback back, and you have a quarterback like Devon (O’Bryon) who is so explosive, that’s a tremendous 1-2 punch,” CM head coach Dan McSurley said. “Christian Poynter keeps on having great vision and you have that hammer back with J.T. (Wolf). That’s a deadly combination.”

The win is Massie’s 54th straight in South Central Ohio League play. CM now has held SCOL opponents to single-digits 80 times in 144 SCOL games, including 37 shutouts.

“It was a good game. We’ll take it. Last time we step on this field, it feels very satisfying to come out with a shutout. I’m very happy for the defense,” McSurley said.

The Falcons (4-1, 2-0) added a fifth score just before halftime and another on their first drive of the second half on Devon O’Bryon’s third touchdown.

Mama delivered the knock out with a pair of Daulton Wolfe scoring scampers in the final period.
