BATAVIA – The Wilmington College volleyball team overcame a slow start to record its second win of the season, beating UC-Clermont, 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18), in non-conference action at the Cougar Dome on Friday.

Wilmington fell behind as the Cougars scored eight of the first nine points, but the Fightin’ Quakers battled back to knot the score at 12. However, Wilmington never claimed the lead in the first set. The Fightin’ Quakers only had eight kills in the first set.

The two teams battled back and forth in the second set, before Wilmington scored the final two points to tie the game at one apiece.

Much like the first set, a team scored eight of the first nine points. However, it was Wilmington which got off to the quick start. The Fightin’ Quakers opened up a 10-point bulge and never had a lead smaller than seven in taking the 2-1 lead.

The Cougars used both timeouts in the first 18 points of the fourth and final set, but it couldn’t halt the momentum Wilmington had brewing. WC was on the cusp of a blowout victory, up 13 points, before UC-Clermont embarked on a comeback attempt. However, the Fightin’ Quakers made enough plays to pull out the win.

Freshman Morgan Householder brought home the win with six kills in the final set en route to recording a career-high 17 kills. She added 17 digs for her first career double-double. She had 11 kills on 12 attempts with no errors over the first two sets.

Freshman Amber Rox had 12 of her 13 kills on the final three sets. She completed her sixth double-double with 21 digs, marking the second time in her career she had 20-plus digs.

Freshman Shelby Wright recorded double-figure digs for the second time in her career, finishing with 11 digs. Senior Kara Short was one off her career-high of 30 assists, dishing out 29 assists in the win.
