STAT WATCH: Franklin’s outing 2nd best in nation this season

0

Jarvion Franklin’s record-setting day for Western Michigan topped the list of five 200-yard rushing performances over the weekend.

Franklin ran 33 times for 281 yards in the unbeaten Broncos’ 41-0 win at Akron . It was the second highest rushing total in the nation this season, behind Jamaal Williams’ 286 yards for BYU against Toledo on Sept. 30, and it broke the 58-year-old school record of 279 yards.

Another Mid-American Conference running back, James Gilbert of Ball State, had 34 carries for 264 yards against Buffalo for the season’s fifth-highest total.

Other 200-yard rushers: San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey, who had 38 carries for 220 yards against Fresno State; Colorado’s Phillip Lindsay, who ran 26 times for 219 yards against Arizona State; and Boise State’s Jeremy McNichols, who had 40 carries for 217 yards against Colorado State.

Pumphrey, who has three 200-yard games, became the first rusher to go over 1,000 for the season. His nation-leading average of 185 yards a game is 39 ahead of D’Onta Foreman of Texas.

Some other notable statistical feats from the weekend:

___

MARVELOUS CARLOS

Louisiana Tech’s Carlos Henderson set national highs for all-purpose and receiving yards in a game in a win at UMass. Henderson caught 12 balls for 326 yards and five touchdowns , and he returned two kickoffs for 36 yards.

A week ago, coming off an ankle injury that sidelined him for 1 ½ games, Henderson had what was then a career-best 232 yards receiving against Western Kentucky.

Henderson became the third player in 10 years with 200 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in back-to-back games, joining Davante Adams (Fresno State) and Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech).

LONGEST PUNTS

At 82 yards each, Bowling Green’s Joe Davidson and Kansas’ Cole Moos got off the longest punts in three years. Davidson, who had a 79-yarder a week earlier, outdid himself against Toledo. Moos’ big kick came against Baylor and was the longest by a KU punter since 2002.

The last time anyone had a longer punt than Davidson and Moos was in September 2013, when Zac Murphy launched an 84-yarder for Miami (Ohio).

LONG FIELD GOAL

Arizona State’s Zane Gonzalez kicked the longest field goal of the season, a school-record 59-yarder in a 40-16 loss to Colorado.

Gonzalez also connected from 51 and 50 yards and tied the FBS record for field goals of 50 yards or longer in a game. Gonzalez, a senior who had never kicked a 50-yarder before this season, now owns four of the eight longest field goals in ASU history. He’s 19 for 20 this season, with six over 50 yards. The FBS record for most field goals of 50-plus yards in a season is eight by Tennessee’s Fuad Reveiz in 1982.

THE GAME’S IN HIS HANDS

Syracuse’s Eric Dungey set the individual season high for plays in a game, running or passing a total of 77 times in the Orange’s 31-17 upset of Virginia Tech.

Dungey threw 53 passes, completing 28 for 311 yards and a touchdown. He established career highs with 24 carries for 106 yards and a TD. He’s the first Syracuse quarterback to throw for 300 yards and run for 100 in the same game.

D3 FREE-FOR-ALL

Coast Guard’s Derek Victory and Curry’s Alex Corvese combined for 13 touchdown passes to tie the Division III single-game record.

Victory passed for 525 yards and a school record-tying six TDs in Coast Guard’s 56-54 win. Corvese threw for 519 yards and seven TDs. Corvese was 42 of 63 but was unable to complete what would have been the tying 2-point pass late in the game.
