The race and fun run were started for a day of remembrance and celebration for LCpl Brett Wightman who lost his life Aug. 3, 2005 serving his country in Hadithah, Iraq. He was among 14 Marines killed in an explosion. Brett was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve in Columbus, attached to Regimental Combat team 2, 2nd Marine Division II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Brett had aspired to be a Marine since his childhood and made his dream come true right after graduating from East Clinton High School. He is remembered by friends and family as a caring person with a great sense of humor.

All proceeds from the LCpl. Brett Wightman Memorial 5K/Kids Run will go toward college scholarships for one male and one female student at East Clinton High School where Brett was an activate student and athlete. As members of society it is up to each and every person to help the communities thrive and succeed, according to a press release.
