DELAWARE- The Wilmington College men’s swim team finished third Sunday in the Corbiere-Merion Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

The men, who were in third place at the conclusion of day one, fought hard to keep their standing during the final session with 633.5 points.

The Fightin’ Quakers take a hiatus from competition until 1 p.m. Jan. 14 when they’ll compete in a dual meet at Manchester University.

“We’re ready for a break from competition,” said WC head coach Trip Breen. “During this break we’ll focus to correct our deficiencies and go from there. I think everyone is fit, so this time will be good to focus on development of power and our ability to finish races. We’ll push limits during training and, by doing so, the team will gain confidence.”

Sophomore Andrew Stewart, a Clinton-Massie High School graduate, brought home one of the Fightin’ Quakers highest, individual finishes of the day, completing the 50-yard freestyle in 22.22 seconds, good enough for second place.

Senior Erik Spraul claimed the second, second-place finish for the team, touching the wall in 4:20.86 in the 400-yard individual medley. Spraul also competed individually in the 100-yard IM, placing third in 57.65 seconds.

Junior Cody Nash earned the team’s highest finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with his time of 18:10.56, which put him eighth in the field.

Senior David Spraul, Nash, Erik Spraul and Stewart came together to form the team’s highest placing 400-yard medley relay. The quartet finished fourth in the field with a time of 3:46.55.

Erik Spraul, sophomore Brendan Tirado, Alex Tillapaugh and Stewart formed the Fightin’ Quakers’ ‘A’ 200-yard freestyle relay which earned fourth in 1:30.96.

“The freshmen are finally starting to acclimate and swim how we’d like them to swim,” said Breen. “For example, Bruce Kotlinski went 1:05 in the 100 [butterfly] yesterday and made one small, technical adjustment for his 100 [butterfly] on a relay this morning to go a 1:02. They’re definitely swimming smarter.”
