WAYNESVILLE — The Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons lost 49-30 Saturday night to Waynesville in the Lady Spartans Tip-Off Classic championship game at Waynesville High School.

The Lady Spartans remain undefeated at 2-0, while Clinton Massie falls to 1-1.

Waynesville jumped out to a 7-0 lead, en route to a 13-10 first quarter advantage. It was a defensive struggle in the second period as Waynesville outscored Massie 9-5 and took a 22-15 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

“It just seemed like we could not score and when we got shots, they did not go in,” said Lady Falcons coach Tim McGraw. “You’ve got to credit Waynesville. Their pressure made it hard for us.”

Clinton-Massie struggled offensively, as two starters Madilyn Newton and Savannah Myers were hampered by foul trouble. Newton and Myers combined for 22 points Friday night against Dayton Stivers, but were scoreless from the floor on Saturday night.

“We did not quit and got it to seven (points) before they made their last run. It was a much closer game than the final score indicates,” McGraw said.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Lady Spartans, as they outscored the Lady Falcons by a 17-5 advantage. Clinton-Massie did not score a field goal in the final period.

Marcella Sizer lead Waynesville with 12 points, followed by Aubrey Rains with 10. No Falcon player reached double figures. Faith Cottrell led C-M with eight points and Johanna Theetge added seven points.

Clinton Massie will play its home opener Tuesday night, hosting Wyoming.
