Brothers jump-starts Falcons 32-30 win over Hurricane

GREENFIELD — Clinton-Massie’s Sam Brothers rallied from a 15-7 third period deficit and recorded a pin to propel the Falcons to a 32-30 win over Wilmington in a South Central Ohio League wrestling match Thursday night at McClain High School.

The victory keeps the Massie squad unbeaten in the SCOL at 5-0. Wilmington drops to 3-2.

“I was nervous,” CM coach Spencer Running said. “We’ve had a couple injuries recently. I knew we were going to have to wrestle well to beat Wilmington. They are a solid program. Props to (WHS coach Kelly) Tolliver for how tough their team is year in and year out. We know it’s always going to be a tough match.”

Clinton-Massie opened the tri-match with a 54-20 win over McClain. Wilmington closed the evening’s festivities with a 52-27 win over the Tigers.

In between, it was a classic match between two strong teams. The Falcons have not wrestled league favorite Miami Trace in a dual match yet, but to be 5-0 puts them in a good position to vie for a league championship, which combines the regular season duals and the league tournament.

For Wilmington, a loss puts them at 3-2 and behind the 8-ball for a league title but it does not eliminate the Hurricane.

“I don’t think we came in here ready (to wrestle) at all, none of them,” Tolliver said. “Maybe this is a wakeup call. I’m hoping.”

Tolliver said the Falcons were more than ready.

“Kudos to Clinton-Massie. They came in prepared,” said Tolliver.

The match started at 220 pounds with Brothers squaring off against Gage Smith of WHS. Smith led 6-5 after one period then 15-7 after two.

Brothers, however, scored a reversal early in the third and then set the tone with a pin 19 seconds into the third.

“Sam’s sort of surprised me this year,” Running said. “No matter how much he’s down, he can pull out a pin late. I think that got the team going.”

But the Hurricane won the next two matches and stretched its lead to 24-14 through 138 pounds when Trent Holliday and Noah Stirr posted back-to-back pins.

Robby Frederick started the Falcons on the comeback road with a pin then CM went up 26-24 with a WHS forfeit. Hurricane 160-pounder Isaac Allen decisioned Ross Lennon and WHS rode the see-saw to a 27-26 advantage.

Anthony Tissandier gave Massie a 32-27 lead with a pin at 182, a triumph that would force Wilmington to score a decisive win, or pinfall, at 195 to tie or win the match. Wilmington’s RJ Tolliver battled Cody Collingham for a 5-1 win, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
