LEBANON – The Wilmington High School girls basketball team had no trouble with the Jills of Oakwood Sasturday, 53-27, in a Div. II sectional matchup at Lebanon High School

In the second round of the tournament, Wilmington will play 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Thurgood Marshall, 54-29 winners Saturday over Fenwick.

“I thought the girls did a good job,” WHS coach Zach Williams said. “We had a week off to prepare and I thought we would be a little rusty coming out today but we got through all that initially. The girls were on the game plan and executed well today.”

Mya Jackson led the Lady Hurricane with 15 points. Jasmine Jamiel had 12 and both Leah Frisco and Faith Sanderson scored 9.

Lauren Hapgood led the Jills with 13 points.

The Lady Hurricane dominated the entire first quarter, outscoring Oakwood 14-0. Faith Sanderson and Jazmine Jamiel accounted for 10 of the points in the quarter and the Lady Hurricane defense started off strong on a day it would force 36 Oakwood turnovers.

Led by Hopgood’s nine points in the quarter, the Jills finally got on the scoreboard but still trailed 29-13 at halftime. A buzzer beating 3-pointer by Jackson, who had seven points in the second, gave the Lady Hurricane a 16-point lead heading into the second half.

Things didn’t change much in the third quarter as the Hurricane continued to increase its lead. The Jills were held to only eight points and the outcome of the game seemed solidified going into the fourth quarter.

Leah Frisco scored six of her points in the fourth as Wilmington wrapped up its tournament opening victory.

“It was a good win to start the tournament off,” said Williams.
