OAC picks Oney as top pitcher after WC sweep

AUSTINTOWN – After helping lead the Wilmington College baseball team to its first doubleheader sweep since 2012, freshman pitcher Matt Oney was named Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

“Matt Oney earning Pitcher of the Week honors is well deserved,” said Wilmington head coach Dan Cleaver. “He works hard at his craft and it’s paying big dividends for him and more importantly for his team.”

Oney (Carlisle, OH/Carlisle) hurled six innings of scoreless baseball as the Fightin’ Quakers sealed the sweep with a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Joseph Saturday. He took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and yielded just three hits with one strikeout for his first career victory.

Wilmington pitching didn’t allow a run over the 18-inning doubleheader for the first time in the school’s NCAA-era history.
