Lady Hurricane splits pair of close games with Beavercreek

BEAVERCREEK — The Wilmington High School softball team split a pair of games against Beavercreek Saturday, winning the opener 7-6.

The Lady Hurricane (2-0) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the first game with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Olivia Veidt, who had five hits and three runs batted in on the day, started the comeback with a homerun in the fourth. She also scored a run and drove in a run in the fifth.

Sophie Blessing had two hits each in each. Courtney Smart had two hits in the opener.

Veidt was the winning pitcher in the first game. Smart took the loss in the second game despite giving up just one earned run.

In the 7-6 win, Smart pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam. Veidt started the sixth inning, gave up a run and had two runners on base. When WHS coach Glen Blessing went to the mound, he was informed he had to remove Veidt because that was his second visit to the mound in the inning.

Smart came on and went to a 3-0 count on the batter. Blessing was looking to intentionally walk the batter but “the umpire declared a strike,” Blessing said.

So Smart battled back to a 3-2 count and was able to get the batter to pop-out to shortstop to end the inning with WHS in front 7-5.

“So Courtney threw what was probably her best pitch of the game high in the zone to force the pop up for the third out,” said Blessing. “She really stepped up in a big way in a very intense situation.

“And by the way, the umpire’s ruling to make us switch pitchers was incorrect. That might be a baseball rule or something, but not softball, as we later confirmed.”

Veidt returned to the mound for the final inning and the win.
