WHS wins in 8 to set up SCOL showdown with Massie on Monday

EBER — The Wilmington High School baseball team defeated Miami Trace 9-5 in eight innings Friday night.

The win puts WHS at 9-3 overall and 8-1 in the South Central Ohio League.

“Friday’s game was an intense match up,” WHS coach Dustin James said. “Energy levels and emotions ran high all game long.”

Stephen Krause pitched the final five innings in relief and held the Panthers scoreless. Trace led 5-1 through the top of the fourth inning.

Wilmington began its comeback with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game, 5-5.

In the eighth, Nate Lakes reached by an error. Zach Wyrick walked then Alex Meyer and Ryan Hottinger had back-to-back singles to make it 7-5 WHS. Krause then had a two-run double to round out the scoring.

“I was very proud of the way our guys stuck together,” James said. “Our backs were against the wall and things looked good for Miami Trace. We chipped away, battled through adversity. Being down four runs on the road going into the fifth inning isn’t where you’d like to be. Our guys really rallied together. A lot of calls didn’t go our way but the kids remained focused.”

James said the Hurricane defense was solid. Wyrick to Lakes to Josh Piechocki erased a Miami Trace runner trying to stretch a double into a triple in the seventh. Lakes also made a diving play earlier in the to keep a run from scoring.

“Our defense was the difference and our bats came alive,” James said.

Chad Davis, Brett Bell, Hottinger and Krause all had two hits for WHS. Bell, Krause and Davis had doubles while Hottinger, Davis and Krause drove in two runs each. Kyler Reed, Chris Wolary and Meyer had a hit and RBI.
