’Cats claim victory at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN – In a place that has been a house of horrors for most Southern Buckeye Conference schools, Blanchester found a way Friday night to walk out with a victory.

The Wildcats got strong offensive nights from Jordan Stroud and Alec Richardson leading Blanchester to a 65-58 victory over Georgetown.

Stroud got warm late in the third when he made three straight baskets, turning a two-point Blanchester deficit into a 45-41 lead. Blanchester led 45-43 heading into the fourth quarter.

“In the fourth quarter, I felt our defense turned around,” BHS head coach Adam Weber said. “Overall, we’ll take it. We haven’t won here in a while.”

Georgetown tied the game on the first shot of the fourth quarter by Levi Burns. It was 45-all.

Richardson answered at the other end for the Wildcats (5-2, 4-1 SBC), and they did not trail the rest of the way.

It was tight the rest of the way. Logan Doss pulled the G-Men within two, 52-50, with 4:38 remaining. Following another Richardson basket, Solomon Underwood drained a three to make it 54-53 Wildcats with 3:25 left.

However, Georgetown scored only five more points the rest of the game. Stroud scored, followed by Richardson, to give Blanchester a 58-53 lead with 2:18 remaining.

Blanchester iced the game at the free-throw line, making 7 of 10 in the final 2:18 to complete the victory.

Stroud led all scorers with 25 points. Richardson added 21, including 14 in the first 9:20 of the game.

“Those two are very effective in the transition game and the half court penetration,” Weber said. “Jordan had two back-to-back drives that were backbreakers for Georgetown. Alec hit those threes early, then got in the lane and really caused some problems.”

Noah Pack led Georgetown with 16.

The first half was a physical one, with the two teams combining for 26 fouls. It wasn’t what Weber wanted to see from his team.

“The biggest thing that hurt us was lack of discipline in the first half,” Weber said. “We were doing things that we don’t teach. Fouling jump shooters, gambling for steals. Those type of lack of discipline things kept the game tight for a while.”

In an odd scheduling quirk, Blanchester had to play four of its first five division contests on the road. However, the Wildcats were able to win three of the four road league games and sit at 4-1 in first place. Bethel-Tate defeated Williamsburg 52-47, so both squads are 3-2 in league play.

“We’ve got the whole back stretch of league play at home except for one,” said Weber. “This was marked on the calendar. We had to battle through this.”
