A look at what’s happening all around spring training in Florida and Arizona today:
WELCOME TO THE RIVALRY
New ace David Price makes his second spring start for the Boston Red Sox when they host the rival Yankees at 6:05 p.m. EDT. Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira are scheduled to make the trip for New York to face Price. Ivan Nova will pitch for the Yankees.
The Los Angeles Angels may need to fill two big holes in their starting rotation. Jered Weaver is dealing with chronic neck pain, and C.J. Wilson had another setback with his troublesome shoulder during Saturday’s bullpen session. It’s unclear when Weaver will resume throwing, and it appears unlikely Wilson will be ready for the start of season. “I think the prognosis for guys to get ready and be able to pitch the lion’s share of the season is still good. But we have a little bit of depth that we might have to tap into,” manager Mike Scioscia said.
Tampa Bay plans to announce its 27-player roster for the team’s March 21-22 trip to play the Cuban National Team in Havana. On the mound, left-hander Drew Smyly is scheduled to face the Phillies in Port Charlotte, Florida. Smyly missed most of last season with a labrum tear but has not allowed a run in two starts this spring. Aaron Nola gets the ball for Philadelphia.
Baltimore Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman makes his Grapefruit League debut against an AL East rival, the hard-hitting Toronto Blue Jays. Tillman missed his first start with a strained right hip flexor and pitched in a “B” game last week. He went 29-13 from 2013-14, surpassing 205 innings in each season, but dropped off to 11-11 with a 4.99 ERA in 173 innings last year.
Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander is set for his third outing of the spring when he faces the Atlanta Braves. The right-hander hasn’t allowed a run in five innings. He was limited to 20 starts last season and finished 5-8 with a 3.38 ERA.
Brandon Finnegan starts for Cincinnati against his former team, the Kansas City Royals. The left-hander was drafted in the first round by the Royals in 2014 and was a member of their bullpen during the World Series that year. They traded him to the Reds last summer in a deal for Johnny Cueto.
