The 2020 high school season started this past Friday and the SBAAC, in general, got off to a good start.

Here’s a recap of Week 1 games, based on information on the SBAAC website.

• New Richmond 27, Bethel-Tate 18: In a cat fight, the Lions took down the Tigers, one of the favorites in the National Division. Luke Lytle, the NR quarterback, did a bit of everything. He passed for 145 yards and a touchdown in addition to running for 83 yards and two scores. The Lions had 82 rushing yards total. Kadin Pollard caught three passes for 91 yards. Jack Moore had two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. In all, the Lions had four interceptions. For the Tigers, Chris Long attempted 59 passes. He also was the leading rusher with 72 yards. Ethan Carter caught nine passes with a score and Gauge Dunn had eight catches with a TD.

• Western Brown 62, Hillsboro 6: The Broncos bucked a former SBAAC rival by leading 56-0 at halftime. Western Brown had 609 total yards, 319 passing and 290 rushing. Drew Novak was 19-26 for 308 yards and three scores as quarterback. Cade Chisman went for 192 yards and five touchdowns on just 16 rushing attempts. Logan Campbell was 6-133-1 receiving while Gary Powell was 4-97-2. Evan Grimes connected on all eight of his extra point attempts. WB forced four turnovers

• Clermont NE 32, Summit Country Day 0: The Rockets rode the arm of Landon Amann to a big season-opening win. Amann was 14-21 passing for 244 yards and four scores. Logan Pottorf caught three passes for 106 yards and two scores, both coming in the third period when the Rockets put the game away. Andrew McIntosh rushed for 50 yards and a TD.

• Batavia 22, Williamsburg 9: This backyard rivalry was won the ‘Dogs. Max Applegate was 32-41 passing for 276 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 63 yards while Luke Scaggs went for 65 yards on the ground. Kellen Epps caught 10 passes for 76 yards and a TD. Scaggs caught eight balls for 56 yards and a score. Batavia intercepted three WHS passes in the win.

• Fayetteville 55, Manchester 6: The Rockets had a successful launch in the opener as Levi Wiederhold passed for three scores and ran for two more. He was 9-15 passing for 12o yards and 3-58 rushing. Fayetteville was one of the few teams to have more rushing yards (204) than passing yards (165). Blake Coffman caught two passes, both TDs, for 47 yards. Kendall Holden had seven PATs on the night.

• East Clinton at Wilmington: The Hurricane had a balanced attack, passing for 135 yards and rushing for 157 yards. Peyton Hibbard was 8-for-11 passing with a TD to Carter Huffman, who caught five passes for 76 yards. Thane McCoy had a 66 yard run and led WHS with 85 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Cameron McEvoy had an interception for WHS. East Clinton had just 133 total yards. Brody Fisher was the top offensive threat, rushing for 48 yards on seven carries. Phillip Davis had a big game on defense for EC, recording three sacks and a fumble recovery. Trenton Garen had an interception while Brandon Zimmerman had a fumble recovery.

• Alter at Clinton-Massie: The Falcons and the Knights combined for 640 yards total, with 405 coming on the ground. Massie had three rushers with eight or more carries with Carter Frank totaling 98 yards and three TDs on 12 tries and Carson Vanhoose going for 78 yards and three scores on 11 carries. Frank also caught two passes for 61 yards. Trevor McGuinness kicked six extra points and averaged 40.5 yards on four punts. Cayden Clutter had a night defensively, forcing a fumble and recovering two fumbles.

• Blanchester at Goshen: Blanchester ran up 448 yards against Goshen, 362 coming via the air as Brayden Sipple tossed four TDs in his football return. Brody Rice also returned and caught three passes for 105 yards asnd a score. Bryce Highlander reeled in six passes for 147 yards and two scores. Gage Huston had a touchdown on the ground and in the air. The Wildcats successfully converted 4 of 6 fourth down plays.
