Week 4 Preview: East Clinton (2-1) at McClain (2-1)

It’s easy … regardless of the vocation … to be good once.

The key to success and the difficult goal for many is to be good on a regular basis. In high school football, that means being good each and every Friday night.

That’s where the East Clinton football team is going in to Friday night’s game at McClain High School.

The Astros are fresh off a 62-12 win over Fayetteville-Perry, where Glenn Peacock ran for 235 yards and five touchdowns.

”We executed much better last week, which is something that we have been talking about for a while now,” Astro head coach Steven Olds said. “The trick now is to do it consistently, week in and week out, regardless of the opponent. If we can do that, we will give ourselves a chance to win.”

The Astros visit Highland County Friday night for a non-league game with the Tigers, a former South Central Ohio League and SBAAC rival. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

”McClain has a solid football team and nearly beat Paint Valley last weekend,” Olds said. “We expect them to put the ball in (Andrew) Potts’ hands as much as possible but they have a couple of other guys that can hurt you as well. On defense they are aggressive and have lined up in both a 4-3 and a 5-2 look. This is always a physical game and this Friday should be no different.”

McClain has wins over Adena and Cincinnati Northwest. East Clinton defeated Huntington and Fayetteville while losing to Cedarville.

“It really comes down to the players and what they want out of this if I’m being honest,” said Olds. “At some point they have to decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to have success. We just keep reminding them that if they want to achieve their goals, both personally and as a team, then sacrifices have to be made and work has to be done.”

In last week’s win, the work came primarily up front where linemen Alex Edison, Owen Roberts, Kaden Hiles, Jade Griffith, Denver Day, Liam McPherson and fullback Maddix Crowe paved the way for Peacock’s great game.

“Glenn is durable, runs hard and has great vision, which is about all you can ask for in a running back,” the EC coach said. “The offensive line has been playing together for a couple of seasons now so there is a continuity between them that only comes with time and reps. Along with execution, all of these things combine to make an effective running game.”
