Blanchester Marion Township firefighters rescue a man trapped in the mud on Friday.

BLANCHESTER — First responders rescued a person trapped in a drained pond on Friday afternoon.

On Friday around 2:30 p.m., the Blanchester Marion Township Fire Department and Blanchester EMS were dispatched to a residence on Shawnee Trace Road for a person trapped at the bottom of a drained pond. According to the emergency services’ Facebook post, the person was found “trapped in the mud up to their waist.”

Assistant Fire Chief Terry Pell told the News Journal the subject — a male in his 60s — had recently drained the pond on his property and was examining it, when he slipped and rolled down into the drained pond.

Pell advised that before rescue workers arrived on the scene, the resident’s neighbors attempted to aid him with what they had, but weren’t successful.

The resident was successfully rescued after roughly an hour of being trapped. Rescue workers built a pathway with plywood and were able to pull him out once they got to him with their equipment. Once the man was removed, he was transported to Bethesda North in Montgomery for further evaluation.

Blanchester officials also received assistance from the Clinton-Warren Joint Fire District and the Jefferson Township Fire Department.

Pell gave a warning to locals who may walk in the woods: “Don’t get down in the mud like that. You may not be lucky like he was.”
