Cindy Running is back in the chair for the Clinton-Massie wrestling program.

Now she’s in charge.

After years of being an assistant coach and eventually athletic director, Running is now the first-ever head coach of the Clinton-Massie girls wrestling program.

”We have a full girls season for the first time in Clinton Massie history and we are very excited about it,” said Running, whose son Spencer is the boys wrestling coach.

Janelle Running is the assistant girls wrestling coach. She wrestled for Clinton-Massie and head coach Running said “we are so fortunate to have her on board.”

Janelle is Dan McSurley’s daughter. McSurley was the long-time head coach of the Massie boys wrestling program.

“She wrestled in high school on the boy’s team and she was very successful,” Running said. “She was a two-time girls state champ before it became an OHSAA sport. Her best wrestling move was the guillotine, which helped her pin many opponents.”

Any girls who have wrestled for Clinton-Massie in the past were part of the boys team. Last season was the first year the OHSAA held a state girls wrestling tournament.

Kaylee Ramsey was a state qualifier to the girls tournament last season for Clinton-Massie.

“Our plan is to have her on the podium at the state meet in Columbus,” Running said.

Ramsey will lead the Falcons on the mat this season, something Running said she is excited about given her experience.

“We have young and excited young women coming on board,” Running said. “They are ready to learn and looking forward to the opportunity.

“Many of our new wrestlers need to learn techniques and even the rules of the sport. We will have a steep learning curve but we are ready for the challenge.”

Running has never been one to shy away from a challenge, nor has she been hesitant to set high standards, even for the fledgling CM girls program.

”Our goal is to build the team and learn the sport from the ground up,” she said. “We also intend to put our athletes in a position to do well in the post-season, with Kaylee ending up on the podium in Columbus.”
