WILMINGTON — Wilmington’s Lady Hurricane fell to 2-3 on the season following a 57-36 loss to SBAAC American Division opponent Western Brown Thursday at Fred Summers Court.
Despite the loss, Wilmington (2-3, 1-2) stays at fourth place in the standings while Western Brown (4-0, 3-0) remains undefeated and at the top.
Wilmington’s star freshman Miya Nance opened the game by hounding down a big steal leading to the first bucket for either team. Following this, offense began to take priority for both teams as they matched one another bucket for bucket and blow for blow.
A mini 5-0 run for the Broncos forced a timeout from Wilmington. Out of the stoppage, Addison Martin was able to knock down a three on a beautifully designed play, but WB remained unfazed going on another 5-0 run and capitalizing on every mistake to take an 18-8 lead into the second quarter.
The Broncos came into the quarter firing on all cylinders as an Olivia Fischer three sparked a 7-2 run that was finally broken when Nance converted at the free throw line. Down the stretch, however, Hurricane misses and turnovers turned into WB buckets and the Broncos took a 32-15 lead into the second half.
Another extremely quick run from the Broncos to open the third gave them a 22-point lead. The run was broken by Elle Martin, but Wilmington was never able to pull back into the game.
Wilmington returns to action Monday versus Dayton Carroll at home.
