MASON — Wilmington lost to Mt. Vernon Saturday night 4-1 in the High School Showcase tennis event at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
But it was an experience the players will long remember.
The professional Cincinnati Open tennis tournament was going on at the same time as the high school event.
“The players had a blast competing under the lights on the pro courts in earshot of the singles quarterfinals over on center court,” Wilmington High School head coach Doug Cooper said. “They interrupted our match for a quick Q&A session with Asia Muhammad and her doubles partner Erin Routliffe (currently ranked No. 1 in the WTA doubles rankings) on Court 6, fresh off their semifinal win. It was brief, but they wanted to give our players some time and encouragement, and the kids were thrilled.”
Cary Holliday and Bailey Wheeler won their first doubles match 6-4, 6-2.
