DRESDEN — Against the third straight strong opponent to start the season, Clinton-Massie outlasted a weather delay but couldn’t get by the Tri-Valley Scotties Friday night in a 14-13 loss.

The game started nearly two hours late and coupled with a long, long bus ride by Massie, the Falcons football clocks were off-kilter to start.

“It’s a long way to drive to get beat but sometimes you have to go (far) to play good teams to learn and I think we learned a lot,” Clinton-Massie head coach Dan McSurley said. “We have to build off these games, it’s going to have to make us better. I thought the guys played well against a really good opponent.”

Cooper Carmack started the scoring with a 23 yard run and with Jack Thamann’s extra point the Falcons were on top 7-0.

After Tri-Valley tied the game at 7, Thamann came through with a pair of field goals to put Massie on top 13-7 at halftime.

But the Scotties came back again, scoring on a 21-yard pass play. The extra point put the Falcons down one, 14-13, with seven minutes to go in the game.

Massie (1-2) had the ball late but failed to convert on a fourth and short and the Scotties (3-0) ran out the clock.

The Falcons failed to score in the second half. McSurley eschewed a field goal opponent at one point because of “hard wind” facing kicker Thamann. But in general, the Massie offense was sluggish.

“We didn’t play complementary football,” he said. “I thought our defense played a really outstanding game going against a veteran team, shut their running back down.

“We just had the ball three times inside the 20, just weren’t able to finish. if we finish drives … .”
