Bates gets big win, but Broncos best Wildcats on BHS courts

BLANCHESTER — Lilly Bates pulled off a big win but Western Brown had too much depth and defeated Blanchester 4-1 Thursday in non-league tennis on the BHS courts.

“Obviously Western Brown came in playing their best tennis of the season after beating (Clinton-) Massie (Wednesday), so a tough time for us to catch them,” Blanchester coach Matt Sexton said.

Blanchester is 6-7 on the year. Western Brown is 8-7.

Bates was a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 winner at first singles over Jordyn Lucas. The match lasted nearly three hours with the first set going one hour, 40 minutes.

“(Bates) lost to Lucas 4-6, 1-6 at the beginning of the season,” Sexton said. “I was going to let her play doubles (Thursday) as a break, but she specifically wanted to play her again. She was down 3-5 in the second set but really took control from there. I think her opponent underestimated her, especially coming off of a big win against Massie’s No. 1 (Wednesday). Lilly’s a different type of No. 1 player, she’s so steady. Underestimate her at your own risk.”
